Ferrero dumped by lucky loser in round 1.

Thanks to a flawless 6-3,7-5 performance, Dominik Meffert more than deserved his victory over Juan Carlos Ferrero. “I certainly had the advantage that I have already played three matches in the qualifiers,” he said. “In that respect, I was more used to the grass. Juan Carlos had a problem with timing, particularly in the first set.” Meffert was also delightedthat his parents had been sat in his box. “My box is usually empty because I always travel alone. Now they will have to come back on Wednesday,” he said. He hopes to receive the same support against Slovakia’s Lukas Lacko in his next match. “I would also like to perform like this against Lukas,” he said. “In any case, I am definitely going to enjoy the rest of my time in Halle.”

Juan Carlos Ferrero was broken in only his second service game, and Dominik Meffert never looked back, deciding the first set in just over 28 minutes. Any thoughts that the Mayen-born right-hander would not be able to keep up the pace were dismissed in the second set as he continued to serve excellently, and he kept up the immense pressure, particularly with his ambidextrous backhands. Neither player gave an inch as the second set proceeded to 5-5, and then it was the 29-year-old German who timed his third break point to perfection, and took it, much to the crowd’s approval. He benefitted from a double fault from the Spaniard, who clearly gave up after that. Meffert won his final service game without dropping a point and ended the game in fine fashion with an ace.
