Caroline Wozniacki was forced out of the Swedish Open by a shoulder injury on Wednesday.

The Dane had taken the first set of her second-round match with home player Sofia Arvidsson 6-2 but suffered the problem at the start of the second. She tried serving underarm at one stage but after consulting with the WTA trainer, Wozniacki decided to call it quits. The incident is bound to lead to more criticism of Wozniacki’s busy schedule which has seen her play in tournaments in nine of the last 10 weeks. With the North American hardcourt season approaching, none of the other top-20 players have opted to play in Bastad this week, a tournament being staged on clay.

Meanwhile, second seed Flavia Pennetta eased past Germany’s Angelique Kerber 6-2 6-3 in 65 minutes while fourth seed Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez beat Spanish compatriot Nuria Llagostera Vives 7-5 6-1. Fifth seed Vera Dushevina crashed out 7-6 (7/4) 6-2 6-2 to home favourite Johanna Larsson, while there were also wins for Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, Polona Hercog and Vesna Dolonts.
