Clijsters and Jankovic breeze through the opening round at the 2012 Aussie Open.

Laura Robson’s Australian Open ended early as she was routed by Jelena Jankovic in round one at Melbourne Park. Robson, who at just 17 years of age is considered Britain’s brightest female hope, was outclassed by the 13th-seeded Serbian 6-2 6-0 in just one hour and nine minutes. The left-hander looked ill at ease from the off on Margaret Court Arena after dropping her opening service game. She had three chances to hit back at 3-2 behind but once they went – the first after an ace from Jankovic which was only confirmed as in via Hawk-Eye, the match swiftly followed, with the second set a procession as Robson sprayed the ball around seemingly with little gameplan. Robson’s defeat added to a day of misery for Britain Down Under, with Elena Baltacha, Heather Watson, James Ward and Anne Keothavong also going out in round one.

Defending women’s champion Kim Clijsters showed no ill effects of a recent hip injury and saw off a spirited challenge from Portuguese qualifier Maria Joao Koehler in the first round of the Australian Open on Monday. The Belgian struggled to get to grips with left-hander Koehler’s serve in the first set but gradually moved up through the gears to run out a 7-5 6-1 winner. Clijsters, who beat Li Na in last year’s final at Melbourne Park, said it was a good feeling to step out onto Rod Laver Arena again. “It’s great to be back, I always love coming to Australia but the feeling is even stronger after last year,” said the 11th-seeded Clijsters. “It’s great to be back on this court as well, it brings back a lot of good memories.
