Flavia Pennetta of Italy was a second-round winner Thursday, while third-seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva lost at the $700,000 Mercury Insurance Open, a hardcourt U.S. Open Series event.
American qualifier Coco Vandeweghe outlasted Zvonareva 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 at La Costa Resort and Spa. Zvonareva was last month’s Wimbledon runner-up to Serena Williams.
Vandeweghe will next face two-time major champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, who got past Italian Sara Errani 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5.
Pennetta got past Russian glamour girl Maria Kirilenko 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). Up next for Pennetta will be second-seeded French Open runner-up Samantha Stosur of Australia.
Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia handled Zheng Jie of China 6-2, 6-1. Russian Alisa Kleybanova will play Hantuchova in the quarters.
