Maria Sharapova is the highest paid sportswoman in the world

Her glamour has helped to make the Russian tennis player the richest woman in world sport

Seven of the 10 richest sportswomen in the world during the past year, according to Forbes, were tennis players, with Maria Sharapova top of the list with earnings of $29m (£18.9m).

The Russian’s endorsements of $23m dwarfed the $6m she collected in prize-money for a 12-month period ending in June of this year.

Much of her income came from sportswear manufacturers Head and Nike, while the 26-year-old has also launched her own brand of sweets called Sugarpova.

Forbes list of the world’s highest-paid female athletes 2013:

1 Maria Sharapova
2 Serena Williams
3 Li Na
4 Victoria Azarenka
5 Danica Patrick
6 Kim Yuna
7 Caroline Wozniacki
8 Agnieszka Radwanska
9 Ana Ivanovic
10 Paula Creamer

Second in the list of leading female earners was Serena Williams of the United States ($20.5m), followed by China’s Li Na ($18.2m) and Victoria Azarenka of Belarus ($15.7m).

Other tennis players in the top 10 are Caroline Wozniacki ($13.6m), Agnieszka Radwanska ($7.4m) and Ana Ivanovic ($7m).

The only three non-tennis players in the women’s top-10 are American Nascar driver Danica Patrick ($15m), South Korean figure skater Kim Yuna ($14m) and US golfer Paula Creamer ($5.5m).

Counterparts

Sharapova earned more than male tennis counterparts Novak Djokovic ($26.9m) and Rafa Nadal ($26.4m).

However, her yearly earnings were bettered by 21 men, with American golfer Tiger Woods the highest paid athlete on the planet with $78.1m of which $65m came from endorsements.

Swiss tennis player Roger Federer ($71.5m) is second followed by American bastkeball player Kobe Bryant ($61.9m).

Andy’s nightime rendezvous?

roddick_2camels-1

 Here’s an exerpt from Andy’s Dec.31st blog………

Arrived in Abu Dhabi last night which was the 30th and woke up at about 5 in the morning cause of jetlag… nothing was open in the hotel, so I decided to go for an exploratory jog for about 30 minutes…. I was about 20 minutes in just running around the grounds of the Emirates Palace where we are staying… definitely one of the nicest places I have ever stayed…. anyways, about 20 minutes in and its foggy and dark outside… you can see light poles and that’s about it…. so I cruise up on these wooden tiki looking shacks… a little out of place for the resort… intrigued, I cruise down the side to see if they open up towards the front….. I cautiously walk around the corner and literally head bump a camel!!!! I jumped back like a girl (no offense to girls who take offense) and then figured out what it was staring at me and started laughing hysterically…. I guess it was a stable for the camels and you can ride them around the resort and stuff…. I sent Brooklyn a text that simply said “in just jogged into a camel” she proceeded to laugh and make fun of me…… good times

Have a safe and happy New Year………..Andy Roddick.

Here’s the latest news from Abu Dhabi:-

Andy Murray defeated James Blake 6-2, 6-2 Thursday to set up a semifinal meeting with Roger Federer at the inaugural Capitala World Tennis Championship.

In the other first-round match, Nikolay Davydenko ousted Andy Roddick 6-4, 6-4 and will face Rafael Nadal in Friday’s other semifinal. Nadal and Federer received first-round byes in the exhibition event, which is not part of the ATP Tour but features six of the world’s top 10 players and offers a winner-take-all prize of $250,000.

Murray broke Blake in the third game and then took a 5-2 lead after using two forehand winners for another break. The struggling Blake was then broken twice in a row in the second set as Murray raced out to a 4-0 lead to take control of the match.

Roddick started by hitting three aces in his opening service game but was broken in the next after missing a forehand, which was enough to give Davydenko the set. Roddick then made two unforced errors in the fourth game of the second set to give Davydenko another break, and the Russian held his serve the rest of the way.

Capitala is the first major tennis tournament to be played at the Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi, and Roddick said he was bothered by the shade covering half the court for the mid-afternoon match.

“It was tough playing out of the shadows and made it difficult to spot the ball,” he said. “It was always going to be difficult coming from six weeks over the break. But regardless of this match, I have worked hard in the offseason and I am happy.”

The top-ranked Nadal and No. 2 Federer will both begin their 2009 ATP season by playing in the Qatar Open in Doha starting Monday. Murray, the defending champion, and Roddick are also playing in the tournament.

Keeping score in Tennis? It’s Love All!

It must be difficult to find true love if you have to contend with being young, rich, famous, good-looking and overflowing with personality……but some of us manage to cope!

The wedding bells will be sounding soon for Andy Roddick, Mardy Fish and Radek Stepanek, and the rumour mill is in overdrive with some of the other WTA and ATP players. Maybe there is something in the air in Serbia besides tennis. Ana is in Argentine to watch her friend Fernando play for Spain, Jelena is relaxing on the beach in the Maldives, and Dominika is only a stone’s throw away on a tropical island. It’s true that money may not be able to buy happiness, but it certainly helps.jelena-bf1ana_ivanovic-61

Andy Roddick out of Shanghai Masters.

federer-1Forced to withdraw from his match against Roger Federer, Andy Roddick was replaced by Czech alteranate player Radek Stepanik. After a close first set that ended in a tie breaker in favour of Federer 7-6, Stepanik just didn’t have enough game to take the second set from the 4 time champion. In a post game interview Federer expressed his concern for his poor play, and said he hoped after a days rest he would feel better and be ready for his next match against the unbeaten Andy Murray. It’s a must win situation for Federer who was beaten by Giles Simon in his first match. A loss to Murray, who has already guaranteed himself a berth in the semi finals, and he is on his way home. Even if Federer squeaks out a win against Murray he has to hope that Stepanik can somehow beat Simon to give him a chance of making the next round.

In the Gold group today’s match between Nickolay Davydenko and Juan Martin del Potro will decide who joins Novak Djokovic in the other semi final. The Argentinian fans must have mixed feelings about their player, they would like to see him win in Shanghai but they want him rested and fresh for the Davis Cup final. Davydenko the number 5 player played well enough to win against Djovic, but just failed to do so and might be too much for the young South American player to handle. Del Potro did beat Davydenko earlier this year in a critical Davis Cup match that put Argentine into the final.

Serena pulls out in Doha…..Dementieva is in!

jankvenus-3dementeva1zvonareva-21Elena Dementieva will join Venus Wlliams, Jelena Jankovic and Vera Zvonareva as the four semi finalists in the Sony Ericsson Championship in Doha, after Serena announced her withdrawal from the event. Serena lost badly to her sister in her match on Thursday where she had trouble serving, and after a close first set lost 6-1, 6-0. She did not complain at the time but later the same night she experienced severe muscle pains in the stomach region. The much anticipated showdown between the sisters will not happen now. Unbeaten Venus will meet Jankovic in one semi, while the other unbeaten player Zvonareva will meet Dementieva.

Serena’s critics will have a field day with this news. Some will say she takes tennis too lightly, thinking that she can win without training by playing herself into a tournament with matches against a couple of easy opponenets, such was not the case in Doha where she was up against her sister. She arrived from Hawaii where she had been enjoying a vacation with her ‘rapper’ boy friend learning how to surf, hardly the training regeme for a tennis player, the took to the court to play Venus with a minimum of tennis practise. Small wonder that she suffered an injury!

Meanwhile Zvonareva won against world number 1 Jankovic to remain as the other unbeaten player with Venus. Zvonareva will play Dementieva, and Venus will be up against Jankovic in what could be the best match of the tournament.
