A ‘big’ day for Brit tennis as Ward and Murray progress.

James Ward

James Ward gave British tennis a boost by reaching the last eight at Queen’s with a 3-6 6-3 6-4 win over defending champion Sam Querrey. The world number 216, Britain’s number two, took the final set on Friday after their match was halted on Thursday because of bad light in London. Querrey, the world number 26 and the tournament’s 13th seed, had been struggling with an elbow problem. Ward, 24, now faces Adrian Mannarino of France later on Friday.

“It’s unbelieveable [to get this far],” he told BBC Sport. “These past two matches are the best of my career.”

Meanwhile Andy Murray moved into the semi-finals after Marin Cilic pulled out of Friday’s quarter-final match with an ankle injury without a ball being hit. Scotland’s second seed and world number four Murray was due out second on Court One to face the Croatian eighth seed for a place in the last four. But Cilic had to pull out just minutes before the players were due on court. Murray will face Fernando Verdasco or Andy Roddick for a place in the final. Roddick, a four-time champion at Queen’s Club, was leading his Spanish opponent 6-2 3-1 in their quarter-final on Centre Court before rain stopped play.
